how does ‘dark knight’ do if heath ledger is still alive?

By Charley Daniels

Heath Ledger as the JokerI haven’t seen The Dark Knight yet, but something came to mind today during the oohs and aahs over the movie breaking all the records. How would it have done if Heath Ledger didn’t die a few months before it came out?

It would have done awesome, of course, besting everything that came before it this summer, no doubt. But would it have broken the record?

Early estimates have Dark Knight at $155.3 million, which is a little over $4 million more than the previous record-holder, Spider-Man 3, which I have seen, and which sucks pretty hard. But only $4 million and change isn’t much when you’re talking things like weekend box office grosses or how much money I’ve spent on gummi bears in my life.

If $155.3 million turns out to be the final number, it doesn’t seem like much of a stretch to assume that if Ledger is alive for opening weekend, the latest Batman tale doesn’t break the record. Of course it would have had momentum on its own, but you have to add at least a few percentage points for the “final performance” factor and all the drama that surrounded it. Don’t you?

  1. Heath Ledger is dead?

  2. We saw it, of course, because Dane is an early adopter.

It was good. I missed Cillian Murphy, though.

  3. Cillian Murphy is still alive, though.

  4. Oh, and the final number turned out to be $158-point-something, but I think the point still stands. Maybe. I need to do some serious thinking on this.

  5. Not.
